OX2 Åland's solar parks - permit application and investment in biodiversity

OX2, a leading renewable energy company in Europe, chose Ecogain as an expert partner for permit applications in connection with the construction of two solar parks in Åland. Driven by its ambitious sustainability goals, OX2 aims to make Åland the leading green energy hub in the Nordic region.  

In the spring of 2023, Ecogain conducted a nature value inventory of the planned solar parks Energipark Åland on Möckelö and Hellesby solar park with the aim of promoting biodiversity. The inventory resulted in concrete proposals for measures, action plans and recommendations for the future to support and preserve biodiversity at the solar parks and the surrounding landscape.   

Proposals under the hierarchy of considerations to promote biodiversity

All proposals, which follow the consideration hierarchy, are designed to firstly avoid, secondly minimize, thirdly restore and fourthly compensate for the impact on natural values.   

OX2 has also received recommendations to protect wildlife and nature during the construction process and future maintenance. Examples include avoiding tree felling during the bird nesting period, minimizing lighting so as not to disturb animals active at dusk, night and dawn, and implementing strategies to prevent the introduction of invasive species.
